What is a CD Account & How Does It Work?

A CD, or Certificate of Deposit, is a kind of account you can use to save your money. CDs require you to commit your funds to that account for a certain period of time — e.g., three months or one year. In exchange for locking in your money, you earn a higher interest rate on your investment.

How is a CD Different from a Savings Account?

This is a great question — one that comes up a lot!

While both are federally-insured* savings options, CDs tend to have higher yields and often have lower minimum buy-ins. So, you can earn more with a smaller starting investment.

However, savings accounts can be cashed out at any time whereas most CDs can’t be liquidated early (or, at least, without a penalty). And, you’re able to make deposits to a savings account anytime, not just when you open the account.

If you don’t need access to your funds immediately, CDs may be a better way to invest — and grow! — your money over the short- to medium-term horizon.

* Up to $250,000 per account.
